Online Certification: Gentle Yoga for Low Back Care Specialty with Justine Shelton – 40 Hrs

The Yoga Vista Academy is our Yoga Education Partner. This Program is for Teachers who want a deep dive Yoga Therapy specialty training in Low Back Care. One of the top reasons students come to Yoga is for low back pain. Low back pain can be caused by a myriad of structural issues and/or spinal injuries and therefore, not all Yoga Poses are appropriate or therapeutic. Thus, it is imperative a Yoga Teacher be educated on the proper bio-mechanics needed to support and not aggravate these conditions when teaching to these populations in group classes or private sessions.

This Certification Course is designed to educate and empower you to teach with confidence to students who have low back issues whether they come to your Group Yoga classes, or for private sessions. You will learn the fundamentals of the Anatomy of the low back so that you can better understand and guide your students in a safe and effective manner. While this course is a deep dive into common maladies and issues of the low back, we cannot separate the low back from the rest of the spine….so the anatomy of the entire spine, including spinal curvatures and misalignments throughout the spine is covered. In addition, the anatomy of the vertebral bodies and intervertebral discs is covered in depth – whether they be in the low back, upper back or neck, the same Yogic principles apply to working with disc damage.

Justine’s in-depth studies in Viniyoga Therapy as well as her own Low Back issues has given her a wealth of knowledge which she graciously and entertainingly shares with you. Each Low Back Condition in this Program comes with a large variety of recommended Yoga asanas and sequences to help you create your own Gentle Yoga for Low Back Care class.

Justine Shelton

Justine Shelton, C-IAYT is a graduate of The Soul of Yoga’s 200 hour training and a four year training program with Gary Kraftsow of the American Viniyoga Institute, she is a 500 hour AVI Certified Yoga Teacher and a 500 hour AVI Certified Yoga Therapist. Justine specializes in structural Yoga therapy, specifically spinal disc injuries, back pain management, as well as joint therapy - including prehab and rehab for replacements.

Her passion is working with people who have different forms of catastrophic illness, helping them to manage their condition, minimize and cope with pain and, most importantly, helping them to realize they are not their condition. She encourages her students to practice where their body is right now, allowing for the constant change and growth that comes with a dedicated practice. One of the reasons she loves Yoga is that there is always more to learn, always room to grow.....this, in addition to her love of anatomy and physiology, keeps her curious mind in learning mode.

I subbed a beginner class yesterday and when i checked in with everyone – one man told me he couldn’t do very much as he had spinal stenosis. Told him i had just done a workshop with you and i guess i asked him all the right questions. He did everything in the class with no pain. Thank you – sometimes you never know where your ripples lead. He left saying his back felt so much better – Thank you!!!

Great program, videos and pdf-handouts. Important knowledge for all yoga teachers. Even as a former nurse and with a previous therapeutic yoga teacher background, I learned a lot from this program and would highly recommend it to others. I’m very happy that I found it, and signed up!

The downloadable handouts are very informative with a lot of detailed pictures. The videos and Justine’s teaching are great. She shares a lot of knowledge and is easy to follow. I also liked the quiz following each chapter, a good way to check your progress.

Justine has a down-to-Earth approach to passing her wisdom on to others. Her language is simple and direct and her humor frequently erupts, making learning less a chore and more something to look forward to. The use of videos enhances the class, especially because the videos, for the most part, are those of Justine’s presentation to a class of students. Something that I appreciated was her use of a skeletal model of the spine and of the pelvis. I have incorporated much of what I have learned from Justine into my own yoga classes, taught primarily to older adults. I am a more knowledgeable and more insightful teacher as a result. I high recommend this course for yoga teachers who want to vastly expand their knowledge of proper low back care when teaching a yoga class.
